Yard Buns

It started with a furry nest
We shielded you from mowers
We watched your babies grow until
One day the nest was empty

I was sad until I saw one
tucked safely under bushes
You had a couple hiding spots
By our ninebark and garden

I watched you eat each evening
You liked the beans and clover
You loved the grass when it got tall
And were always so alert

It broke my heart that one morning
When I saw a flattened bun
In the street only two doors down
I had hoped it wasn't you

Just a few days later our bun
reappeared to our surprise
A new nest had been created
Surely babies were inside

The next day we saw two babies
Sadly one hadn't survived
It took one day to fall in love
but on the fourth day he died

I hope momma bun sticks around
We love her so very much
We grow enough in the garden
Happy to provide her food

It was the year of the rabbit
Made a pin in your honor
I know buns don't last forever
But I really wish they could
